RIP, Read the First
Title: Affinity
Author: Sarah Waters
Original publication date: 2000
Plot Summary: After the death of her father and a subsequent botched suicide attempt, Margaret Prior takes to visiting Millbank Penitentiary as a "lady visitor." While visiting the bleak institution, Miss. Prior becomes intrigued by one of the prisoners, Selina Dawes. Dawes, a noted spiritualist, has been convicted of assault and fraud after a troubling séance.
Like Fingersmith, Affinity is set in Victorian England and filled with deception, lust, and a plot twist you wouldn't believe. The novel also delves into the Victorian obsession with spiritualism which provide an odd mix of repressed sexual hysteria and creepiness. Completely gave me chills.
