The rest of the birthday celebration

I can't really take full credit for the arts and crafts portion of the Halloween birthday bash.  Sam was an immeasurable help in getting it all together.  We did several projects and like a ninny I didn't photograph as much as I should (I was too busy enjoying myself!).  We spent Friday night watching The Walking Dead and getting ready.  Sam cut eye holes in paper towel rolls (the goal was to put in glow sticks and make creepy eyes... alas, the glow sticks were to tiny to make an impact.  He also cut out monster parts to make treat bags with the kids.  I stuffed goody bags.  I also filled wee plastic bags with mini marshmallows and then drew ghost faces on the bags.  I'm so glad I had Sam to help!

A good blogger would do a tutorial or photograph everything in extreme detail.  I'm not a good blogger.  Instead you can look at all the fun we had:

Sam is a tall, tall man

Sam and Brent hamming it up

Shannon had a great time as well.  You'll notice that rather than drinking beer all of my friends are getting crunk on coffee.  That's how we roll.

Atticus spent most of his time running

Craft time with Sam

Even on-the-go-Atticus loved craft time!

This is how the day after the party went.  An exhausted tot with sugar detox going on... loads and loads of tears.
I didn't get a chance to snag some pictures of The Great Pumpkin hunt.  It was like an Easter Egg hunt but with pumpkin candy and a Great Pumpkin (ahem... an orange Easter Egg with $5 in it).  I also didn't get to take pictures of Hope.  She had three friends over and spent the bulk of the party in her room ... giggling... incessantly giggling.  They emerged for food and the would retreat away from the little ones.

I'm thinking our Halloween/birthday bash will continue each year... Next year?  I'm thinking a Harry Potter theme!

Oh My.... How Pinteresting: 07/19/12

What's catching my eye this week on Pinterest

Another lovely embroidery pattern
This is a brilliant idea!  Freezing fresh herbs with butter or olive oil in an ice tray.  Bag it, freeze it, and use it later.

YES PLEASE.... Banana Pudding Cake!
I'm looking at my dull craft table lamp and getting inspired
I need to do this.  No more digging around for wee jars of cloves!

Proof that Homeschooling Stays with a Person

A few months ago, things were really rough around here. Sam was struggling with balancing his full-time job, his freelance art work, and his part time tattooing job and feeling like he had time to relax with the family.  I am extremely blessed to have a very forward thinking husband.... he also feels that when he is home the childcare and chores should be divided 50/50.  So there's no real "leaving everything to mom."  He cleans, cares for Atticus, hangs out with Hope, cooks dinner, does laundry ....THE WORKS.  I was feeling the pinch from working full-time, mommy duties, cooking, handling the bill paying, and doing all the childcare while Sam works 500 million hours a week (okay, that's a bit hyperbolic).

All of this led to our free time and our family time being sucked away.  We spent the few minutes in the evening discussing bills or debating who would clean the kitchen and who would bathe the baby.  We argued over bills not being paid on time and spent most of our communication time via texting while at work.  As introverts and creative types we were also stressed about being unable to have any time to create things.   Essentially -- any time for paying bills, catching up on chores, folding laundry, having creative introvert time, talking, showering, prepping for the next day, and making love was completely crammed into the hours of 8pm - 11pm on Sunday or during the 12:30pm - 2:30pm nap time on Saturdays.  We desperately needed a change.

So here is what we did:

First, I emailed a super-star blogger to ask her advice.  She is the wife of a tattoo artist, a mother, and has her own business.  And they're family seems pretty rad with plenty of together time and creative time.  Sam had asked me to name one tattoo artist family that hasn't seen divorce and that was the family I thought of immediately. The one thing this blogger really stressed is how her family has had to think creatively about the concept of weekend or family time to make things work for they're family.  This family has more of a focus on early morning family time and a weekday weekend and it works for them because they had heart, put forth effort, and changed the way they think about their family's structure and needs.

Secondly, Sam really analyzed what he wants most and ultimately it is the art that he is passionate about.  Tattooing is important, but it is more of a medium (like watercolors or pen and ink) than his number one passion in life.  He wants to do all sorts of art and not limit himself.  This meant that going 100% at tattooing wasn't going to be a high priority and would occupy about 50% of his "art" as opposed to being the end ultimate goal. This allowed Sam to change his tattoo schedule.  Previously he was working Friday night, Saturday night, Monday night, and Tuesday night with one Sunday afternoon a month.  Now he is off on Friday nights and works Saturday afternoons instead of Saturday evenings.  It is a nice change.

Third, I put my organizational skills to work and came up with three things that will help our family work better:

  1. I let go.  The laundry isn't always folded.  Our yard looks like a hot mess.  The garden has increased our bunny population and sustained the deer but hasn't yielded much else.  I don't make all of our bread by hand.  I shelved the idea of sewing for awhile.  Basically I just decided that I was going to cease attempting my purty-perfect-pintrest idealized life and just live a little.  Atticus goes to bed by 8pm and any other "chores" must be done by 8:30.  After that time I leave the sink or laundry pile or mess of bills and talk to my husband or read or take a shower and simply relax before going to bed between 10:30 and 11.
  2. I made a chore chart.  Sam and I spent most of the time we had together talking about what needed to be done.  Often we went behind each other doing chores (we'd both be doing laundry while the dishes piled, for example).  The chore chart is just a basic excel sheet.  I have everything on there:  daily chores, weekly tasks , meals, Atticus's bathtime, bill paying, etc.... I divided the tasks 50/50 taking into consideration work schedules.  For example, on the nights when I cook dinner, Sam does the dishes and vice versa.  We also have a set time to do the bills.  By Thursday our weekly bills and budget are set and by Monday afternoon everything is paid or put into the appropriate account (erm... envelope).
  3.  I flipped the house.
Now this is where the title of this post comes originates.  I was homeschooled for most of my life and it was very common for my mom to appropriate a room of the house as the "school room."  Sometimes this was the end of our long, rectangular livingroom, sometimes it was a bedroom, and sometimes it was the dining room in the middle of the house.  The area would completely become the school area.  This meant that sometimes all three of the kids shared a room to free up a bedroom for a school room or the dining room table lived in the kitchen or laundry room.  In the school room would be books, desks, posters, a globe, everything we needed to study.  This seemed normal to me.  Of course people must have at the very least a "library" where the family got together to learn things and create projects, right?

Okay now you guys are going to have to make up before pictures in your head because I accidentally deleted the pictures from my phone.  I'll describe the FORMER room and why it didn't work for us:
  • The sunroom was my "craft" area.  This didn't work because I can't see into the rest of the house.  If I am in the sunroom I can't see Atticus playing in the living room or monitor Hope on the computer.  So I ended up toting things to the dining room table and the craft table became a place to pile stuff.
  • The dining area had a desk which was piled with papers and the dining room table piled with Sam's art, the computer, and crafts. Obviously, it was a pain in the butt to have our meals like civilized folks.
  • The living room is the largest room in the house.  It contained bookshelves, the couch, the TV and Atticus's toys.  It is set up to center around the TV.  This is bizarre because not only do we not have cable we don't even have streaming anything set up to go to our TV.  We basically just watch one DVD a week.  Why the hell is the idiot box the center of everything when it means NOTHING to my family?
Alright... here is the big switcharoo:

The sunroom is now our dining area.  This is a super plus because Atticus makes a ginormous mess and it is easier to swiffer the linoleum after every meal than to constantly clean the already worn out hardwood floors.

Our former dining area is now the "living room".  Please ignore the overly smooshed couch. I really need to restuff those cushions.

Another view of our new living room.  The TV is there, but it is actually more conducive to our cuddly movie times.  We can actually turn up the volume a bit because the kids' rooms are on the other end of the house.

Our family room... aka the art room aka the craft room aka the playroom... computer room... yup... a schoolroom.  Atticus can play, Sam can draw, I can blog, and Hope can work on her tween collection of poster cutouts all in the same room.  We can spend time together and do our own thing at the same time!

My little crafty shelf.  Bills, embroidery patterns, and sharp objects that need to stay away from the wee one are tucked in here all willy nilly.

The mantel area laden with owls and yarn underneath  That desk keeps Atticus from crawling in the fire place (which we don't use) and keeps him from pulling that heavy iron grate over.
 Books and the toy corner.
The entry way we don't use is now a baby-gated art closet.  Sam's paints, my sewing machine, fabric, and yes, random lamps are stored here.

Bookshelves and Sam's drawing table in the spot with the best light.

So how are things working so far?  Well I could go on and on about how I wasn't able to increase the QUANTITY of time we all have together but that I've enhanced the QUALITY of time we have together as an entire family, as a couple, and as a pair of nerds with individual interests... but I'll let some more pictures do the talking:

Snot Induced Idleness Leads to Super Creativity Powers (sorta)

I've been home ill with a sinus infection since Wednesday.  I finally went to the doctor on Thursday and I didn't go into work Friday and I'm out today.  You should know that I am the worst sick patient ever.  I love being busy; I hate seeing the house a mess and lying in a heap of blankets for days and staring at the ceiling or television is a literal hell.  During my snot-induced loafing I thought about why I hate being leisurely while ill.  It comes down to two things:
  1. I am going to die:  As in, Life is only here for a bit and we are quickly hurdling towards demise.  Therefore I should spend my time doing worthwhile things in order to eek the most I can out of my wee slice of time on Earth.  Of course, "doing worthwhile things" translates into making lists, buying books, and knitting most of the time.  I'm an Existentialist with embroidery patterns and cookie recipes.
  2. I have Mom Guilt:  When Sam -- who is hardly ever ill -- is sick or the kiddos aren't feeling well I send them all to bed, make pots of tea and stockpots of homemade soup, and dispense as many cuddles as tolerated.  When I am sick, I feel like I'm slacking on my "mom-duties".  I don't want to clean, or go to the grocery store, or -- the most guilt-inducing of all -- play with the kids.  Then when Sam is at work and the kiddos are at school (like right now) I feel like I should "do" something.  Laundry? Re-organizing the freezer?  Dusting?  On Friday, I decided to heave myself out of bed and tidy the house.  I spent 20 minutes loading the dishwasher, folding clothes, and making beds.  Then I had a huge coughing fit, felt utterly drained, and slept for another hour.  In other words, it is okay for Sam and this kiddos to be ill and rest, but I feel like the ultimate slacker-mom when I am ill and rest.
My Not-So-Inner Feminist and my Inner-Reasonable-Person (she is buried deep) surfaced on Friday after I overdid it and decided to Take It Easy.  I finished the last 400 pages of Our Mutual Friend.  I did a little bit of embroidery.  I watched Downton Abbey.  I napped extensively.  I let Sam handle dinner, and Atticus's bath, and playing with the kids.  In fact, Sam took Atticus to the doctor (he has a little ear infection, but we caught it early on) morning and I stayed home and played Bejeweled on my phone.

By Saturday night I was going insane.  I had to do something.  So I knifed and buried my Inner-Reasonable-Person and decided to organize my Craft Lair.  You can see the awfulness of my Craft Lair here.  Atticus helped.  He had great fun putting skeins of yarn in a laundry basket and then dragging them out again.  I diagnosed the problem with my craft lair.  I didn't have places to put things.  Well, I have places, but none of them good when there is a curious toddler afoot.  I let Atticus get into things as long as they aren't dangerous or impossibly messy to clean.  Therefore yarn and embroidery hoops are forever scattered around the house.  I needed a place out of the grasp of Atticus the Future Fiber Artist.... hummmmm......

Bingo....

Diaper boxes on top of the Craft Lair dresser!

Well, that worked, but was completely unattractive.  Then Creativity slapped me silly and I had an idea.

1 Diaper box + rolls of faux wood-paneling (rescued from the library trash) + thrifted pillowcases =  ATTRACTIVE YARN STORAGE.

I whipped these up in the space of 10 minutes and had all my yarn tidied away neatly.  I spent the rest of the evening working for 10 minutes and then resting for 50 minutes.  I got it done and when Sam came home from the tattoo shop sometime after-midnight the Craft Lair was a-sparkling.

Ohhhh.... ahhhhh....

They aren't perfect, but they look a heck of a lot better than undecorated diaper boxes.

Organization for the win!

A place for everything!
Accomplishing this really raised my spirits and it really didn't take too long or too much effort once I had a place for all my supplies.  Huzzah!

Making Me Crazy: a Plea to Crafters, Bakers, Stitchers, and Yarn Wranglers

Yes, the cat bed is on top of the craft table.
My beautiful craft area has become a veritable nightmare and the place where we put everything we don't want Atticus to chew on.  I am overwhelmed by the mess and all the projects.  I don't know where to start (or maybe it is when to stop!).  I have quit Pintrest temporarily because I am collecting more ideas and then doing nothing with them.

My goal this week is to organize this wreck.  Then I am going to figure out February projects.  I think I need to limit myself to one project in each area a month.  I feel like a list may be in order.

My question to all the creative types out there: how the hellfire do you organize /manage your projects?  Is this some sort of odd OCD?  Please help!

Things I'm Loving: 11/04/2011

I love my little rental house, but the kitchen is functional and ugly as sin.  I'm been thinking of ways to spruce things up a bit and I love the idea of this fabric backsplash and the open cabinetry option.

As I chopped a butternut squash last week to make chili I thought to myself, "my death will probably involve a knife and a butternut squash."  Here is a great tip for roasting a squash so I don't maim or kill myself with a knife.

I'm totally signing up for this reading challenge.  In fact, next year I think I'll make a month my "read from my stacks" month.  I love supporting libraries, but I need to read the books on my shelf!

I desperately need a needlebook.  Luckily, I found a pretty awesome set of directions for a cute, scrappy needlebook.  I need to bust out those scraps and get to stitching!

I'm loving these beautiful Dahlia pins!

As if I needed another excuse for plate thrifting.

Hello to all my baking and book buddies, Penguin is releasing in the US several titles from the Great Food series.  I want them all!  Geez those covers are lust-worthy.

Reason #372 on the "why I need a doughnut pan" list.

Owl brooch!!!!!!!!!!!!

More embroidered book cover goodness.

A Craft Lair!!!

Nothing gets this mama out of a funk more than a glorious weekend with the family.  We had a shitty yard sale that only yielded $37.  So Sam and I blew the money on Thai food and a trip to Michael's for finger paints for the kids and oil pastels for Sam.  I've played outside with Atticus (Hope is visiting her Nana), tidied the house, watched a few good movies, and accomplished this......

When we originally began renting this house in May 2010, I had plans for a basement craft lair.  That just wasn't practical.  I'm usually multi-tasking while I knit, crochet, embroider, and craft (baking and minding babies mostly) and sequestering myself downstairs wasn't practical.  Now the stuff is upstairs in the sunroom so there will be plenty of light and I'm near the kitchen and in prime view of all the kiddos.  This is only the beginning of this organization project and I'll be sure to post more pictures as I work on it.  Beau approves.  He hops up on the craft table to flee from grubby baby hands.

Photo Friday: The Bake and Make Edition

An embroidered birthday hankie for a friend...

Blueberry Oatmeal Pecan Cookies...

A basketweave dish cloth. Most of it is knitted and then I did a crochet thingamajig border...

Cheery Cherry Muffins...

Basketweave Cloth...

I'm in a makerish mood.  I have plans to bake more Cherry Muffins, something new with blueberries, and a chocolate plum cake.  I'm also knitting more dish cloths for all the marrying/newlymoved/birthdaying folks I know.  I've also started a project for a stitch-along, but I couldn't take pictures because the camera batteries are dead.  Oh yes, and I think I'm starting a low-key knitting group at the coffee shop.  Oh yeah!  And crafts, I have plans to make somethings with Hope and a few felt owls.

I hope you all are out there making something.  It is so satisfying and peaceful!

And its May

I read a paltry amount of books, spent far too much money, and spent very little time at home. It was wonderful hanging out with my college friends, workish friends, and new friends. Even so, I am quite glad it is May. There are many changes coming up this month and plans for new things.

All through April I've been making plans for May. Primarily because I knew that in May my roommate and partner in crime Nicky would be moving out and that the library would be going to summer hours. Both of these things mean that I will be spending significantly more time only with Hope or by myself when Hope goes to grandma's.

So what are my grand plans for the month of May? What will I do with an entire month full of less work and less going out?
  • My first goal is to plunge headlong into my role as Georgia Gypsy Queen secretary. I just found out today that I was chosen for the position. For those of you who aren't familiar, the Gypsy Queens are a national tattoo promotional sisterhood. Part of my duty is to construct a GAGQ newsletter. I already have plans in mind and would like to publish the first one this month.
  • Not surprisingly, my second goal is to read like a motherfucker. I have a towering pile of books to read and am itching to spend a day in the sun reading. It would be most kick-ass if I could manage to read 10 books this month to make up for my lack of reading last month.
  • Fix up my apartment. Alex and I broke up in September and a few weeks later roommate Nicky moved in to help me out with Hope. She is leaving next week, and this will be the first time that it has been just Hope and I living alone since 2002. I just signed a new lease on my little townhouse apartment and am completely ready to spruce things up. I have plans to repaint the downstairs and upstairs, jazz up the kitchen, get up some more bookshelves, and generally work on making it look less like a college student apartment and fool folks into thinking a real grownup lives here.
  • Teach myself to sew. I can knit. I can crochet. I can embroider. Hell, I can make you some pasties! But the SEWING MACHINE scares the bejesus out of me. I'm going to conquer that damn thing this month. I have plans for skirts and aprons and owl pillows that must not be delayed.
  • Tame my Netflix queue. I having an insanely large Netflix queue. 491 movies. Did you know that that is the maximum number of movies Netflix allows in a queue. I have DVDs like Wristcutters and Sweeny Todd (new), Akira (anime), the Legends of Horror films (old b-horror movies), and In the Realms of the Unreal (documentary).
  • Plant a small garden. I am already so poor that I've had to cut out buying meat excepting on the rare occasions when chicken is on sale. Produce is INSANELY high as well. I'm clearing out some containers and preparing to grow my own veggies. Let's pray I don't kill the poor plants.
  • Learn to crochet a shawl. I tend to only crochet blankets as there is very little effort and thought in crocheting a square. I've pulled out some patterns for shawls and have a terrific sparkly mohair yarn.
  • Thrift store smack down. So far I haven't used a credit card all year (go me). I would like to continue my giant "fuck you" to Corporate America by buying most of the things I use at home from thrift shops. And by thrift I mean the Salvation Army and Goodwill, not overpriced-hipster-I-paid-$100-for-my-vintage-sundress place. I will be totally slumming it and hunting for furniture, curtains, and decor from the unwanted bins of rubbish.

Ya think that will keep me busy enough during May?
