Beautiful and Good

"'But I can't give up wishing," said Philip, impatiently. "It seems to me we can never give up longing and wishing while we are thoroughly alive. There are certain things we feel to be beautiful and good, and we must hunger after them. How can we ever be satisfied without them until our feelings are deadened?'"
-- The Mill on the Floss, George Eliot

----------------------------------------------------

At Thanksgiving I think it is silly to write about how thankful I am for my friends, family, cat, job, health, etc.... My life is wonderful because of the people in it. Let's not be redundant.

Instead I'd like to focus on all the itty-bitty, non-essential things that make me thankful. And, yes, this might be the most ridiculous list ever:

1. a well-organized, rainbow-hued embroidery floss box
2. generic hot cocoa
3. soup, warm bread, cheese, and home baked goods
4. Wolf Parade
5. coffee shops that let regulars run a tab
6. libraries at night
7. fuzzy socks
8. pretty paper and smooth ink
9. turquoise
10. teacups
11. decent bookmarks
12. squishy couches
13. walking at dusk on a sidewalk around and through a leaf pile while smelling nippy air
14. words that are fun to say like: nebulous, murmur, jumble, and doodad.
15. a well-timed "that's what she said" joke
16. rain
17. new book smell
18. cardigans
19. well-ordered lists
20. pumpkins
21. illuminating quotes from Victorian novels

In the past 48 hours I've been thankful for all of the things above. Inadvertently, I must hunger after all of these things, because it satiates something in me. And, yes, they are all beautiful and good, even the "that's what she said" joke.

You're good at organizing your floss box! Mine looks all messy.

BTW, I copied your non-essential list. :) Love it.

I love the little things-I think it's great to list them. :D I have my closet and my bookshelves organised ROYGBIV style, and they're on opposite walls of my bedroom. It makes me feel like I'm sleeping in a rainbow-I love it!

You should see what my floss looks like. Actually I'm too embarrassed to share a photo...
