Teaser Tuesday

I want to point out that I finished THREE BOOKS during my four day weekend.  I don't want to jinx myself, but I think I might have my mojo back!  Okay, on to the teasers!

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
  • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!
My teasers

from Invitation to the Waltz by Rosamond Lehmann:
"The village, in the hollow below the house, is picturesque, unhygienic:  it has more atmosphere than form, than outline:  huddled shapes of soft red brick sag towards gardens massed with sunflowers, Canterbury bells, sweet-williams.
There is a pump on the green; also a tall historic-looking lump of granite whose origin is wrapped in legend."  (chapter 1, page 7)
from The Waves by Virginia Woolf:
"The sun had not yet risen.  The sea was indistinguishable from the sky, except that the sea was slightly creased as if a cloth had wrinkles in it."  (page 7)
from American Gothic Tales edited by Joyce Carol Oates:
"Jim and Irene Westcott were the kind of people who seem to strike that satisfactory average of income, endeavor, and respectability that is reached by the statistical reports in college alumni bulletins.  They were the parents of two young children, they had been married nine years, they lived on the twelfth floor of an apartment house near Sutton Place, they went to the theatre on an average of 10.3 times a year, and the hoped someday to live in Westchester."  (from "The Enormous Radio" by John Cheever, page 253)

I do love Joyce Carol Oates. I don't know why I don't read more of her stuff. I was so bowled over by Beasts the first time I read it (and all the follow-up times), I think I satisfied my craving in one shot. I've read a few of her short stories and love those, too.

Andi- I actually don't care for Oates novels. I've tried a few and they annoy me. I loved Beasts and I like her shorter fiction and critical works. Let me know if you find a longer novel of hers that you like and I'll give it a shot!

Great teasers. I definitely want to read the first novel, which is being added to my TBR list. My TT: http://www.rundpinne.com/2010/04/teaser-tuesdays-in-shadow-of-cypress.html

I love the Woolfe teaser the most, but the others are good too. Mine is at The Crowded Leaf.

I really keep meaning to read Woolfe but I haven't yet. It seems you either love her or hate her writing.
I hope you're enjoying the books. My TT is from The Seventh Witch and can be found here
