I showed great restraint this week and limited myself to five library checkouts. Of course, I did this because I already have gobs upon gobs of library books at home. Here's my loot:
- Green Mansions by W.H. Hudson: I've heard of this book before, but I can't remember from where. According to the book jacket Galsworthy liked this novel. In my opinion, what's good enough for Galsworthy is good enough for me!
- The Law and the Lady by Wilkie Collins: The first novel featuring a female detective is by Wilkie Collins?! Sold! I can't wait to dig into this mystery by one of my favorite authors.
- The Professor by Charlotte Bronte: I've been dying for more Bronte after reading Villette earlier in the year, but I don't quite know if I'm prepared to read a chunkster like Shirley. At 300 or so pages The Professor looks quite managable.
- A Flaw in the Blood by Stephanie Barron: Mystery and intrigue surrounding Queen Victoria, perfect.
- The Alienist by Caleb Carr: This book has been highly recommeded by fellow historical novel nuts and I've been saving it for the right time. For some reason, the time feels right.

I loved the Law and the Lady when I read it a year or so ago. I need to pick another Wilkie Collins book--I usually try and read at least one a year. I really liked The Alienist, too! I'm trying to keep my library books down to a small pile as well.
I also recently read "The Law and the Lady." It is an amazing book that tells a lot about what it was like to be a woman in Victorian England, and how little control they had over their own lives.
