I'll be participating in Peril the First, which is to read four books. I'll also try to read at least 2 short story collections in addition to the fiction. As usual, I've created a pool of books to choose from; first of all the ones already at home:
- The Anatomy of Deception by Lawrence Goldstone (library book, in progress)
- Masterpieces of Mystery and Deception by Agatha Christie (library book)
- The Alienist by Caleb Carr
- The Black Robe by Wilkie Collins (interlibrary loan, not here yet)
- Another short story collection that I haven't decided on yet!
I wanted a bigger pool of choices, so I was off to the library with goal of picking out 5 more books. I spent well over an hour scanning the shelves and muttering "something creepy something creepy something creepy". I found many other books I wanted to check out, but I resisted. Here are the five books I came away with:
- The Sign of Four by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
- The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux
- Conspiracy of Paper by David Liss
- The Glass of Time by Michael Cox
- The Nature of Monsters by Clare Clark
Okay! I'm already to have the bejabbers (and maybe a baby) scared out of me!

The Alienist has been on my bookshelf for years. I hope to read it soon but obviously the odds aren't good considering how long it has been sitting there already.
I listened to The Alienist and Angel of Darkness on audio cassette several years ago and both were fantastic, gripping experiences. I hope you enjoy it. I went to the library the other night and picked up a few RIP books myself and will no doubt hit the library even more over the next few months. Picked up a couple of seasons of Twilight Zones to watch as well.
Funnily enough, I haven't heard of any of these books, but I know some of the authors. I'm also doing a Wilkie Collins for the RIP challenge, but mine is The Moonstone.
Have fun with this challenge! It looks like you may read more than 4.
LOL, excellent choices. Phantom has been on my shelves for a ridiculous number of years. I think I finally packed the damn thing up thinking I would never read it.
I read the alienist around ten years ago and I love it!! Seeing the title here makes me want to read it again.
Maybe I should at this in my list too (only if I don't have many TBR books)
Looks like a great pile of books. I hope you enjoy!
