Wonderful Stuff: Cupcakes

Natalie Dee

I have always been a fan of baked goods (obviously). My mother was a stay-at-home-mom and in addition to homeschooling the three of us kids, running the Girl Scout troop, and being a whiz at sewing Anne of Green Gables style puffed-sleeve dresses, my mom baked. A lot.

As my sister says, "things always seemed right when mom was cooking in the kitchen." We had cake and cookies, bread and soups, and some oddities like homemade marshmallows and mayonnaise. She can make perfect spritz cookies and wholewheat pasta. In fact, I don't think there is a single thing my mom couldn't make and make better than anyone else.

Perhaps I'm prejudiced.

For a long while, I had no inclination to bake. Cooking meals while in college with a baby and a 30 hour a week job was a stretch. I didn't have time for being in the kitchen. Now that Hope is old enough to realize that she is my official taste-tester and can eat all the goodies I make, I find myself spending more time in the kitchen for fun.

Part of the challenge of baking is that it is me and an eight-year-old and my hips and her ADHD simply don't need 4 dozen cookies, three-layer cakes, and hordes of cupcakes. Luckily, I'm surrounded by folks who loved baked goods -- Inky Darcy, comrades at the coffee shop, coworkers, and friends.

Alas, I don't ever make cake. It is difficult to transport (especially is you are sans car) and difficult to distribute. And I'm one of those gals who constantly journeys to the kitchen - quite absentmindedly -- to "even-up" the cake. Of course, I've already mentioned that my hips don't need this.

Hence, I find cupcakes wonderful. Fancier then cookies and more fun to decorate in my book, cupcakes make people feel special and happy, which, in turn, makes me feel special and happy.

I've decided to embark on some recipe creation. All of this was inspired by a Flickr photo of an Earl Grey cupcake that made me salivate (seriously, check out some good food porn at Bake and Destroy).

So, people, I'm in the midst of making tea and coffee flavored cupcakes, but I need your help in deciding where to start. Take my survey below to tell me what you think. The Earl Grey cupcake recipe is from Bake and Destroy, but the others came from my brain and not Google. Of course, I'm sure that someone has already thought of this stuff, but I don't want to ruin the quest for an awesome cupcake of my own design.

Vote! Tell me what you think! There maybe some baked goodies in your future.

Yay, I voted and now I feel like a very responsible blog citizen. I've had earl grey chocolate but never in baked pastry form. I can't wait to read about the results (esp. since I can do without ever going into the kitchen except to feed the cat and wash up stuff).

I always read your blog but rarely comment (**blushing** - so sorry). I took the survey and now I'm STARVING for cupcakes, especially the hazelnut one - yum!!! Good luck! Can't wait to read how they turn out! ;-)

I have Sprinkles Cupcakes in my neighborhood, but despite all the hype, I am not a fan of their cupcakes. Way too much frosting and way to expensive for just a small bite. I think I'm going to try out the recipes on the site you provided, although it won't be good for my hips either but definitely good for my sanity! :)
