Shortly before 1 this afternoon I waited patiently outside the public library for the second day of the annual library book sale. I had to work at my university library yesterday and missed the first day of the sale. I know that there was more of a selection yesterday, but you cannot beat last day prices. I bought 14 books for $5. Yup -- 5 dollars! Here are the spoils:
- The Last September by Elizabeth Bowen
- The Woman Destroyed by Simone de Beauvoir
- Thornyhold by Mary Stewart
- The Detective and Mr. Dickens by William Palmer
- The Hearing Trumpet by Leonora Carrington
- Six Gothic Novels (an abridged version of six Gothic novels. I don't know what I'm going to do with this book as I don't read abridged versions. I bought it for the ridiculous Gothic cover).
- An Instance of the Fingerpost by Iain Pears
- Love in the Time of Victoria by Francoise Barret-Ducrocq
- The Island of Lost Maps: A True Story of Cartographic Crime by Miles Harvey
- The Horse's Mouth by Joyce Cary
- Too Many Ghosts by Paul Gallico
- The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield
- A Conspiracy of Paper by David Liss
- The Killing Time by Caleb Carr
WOW! What a great haul! Now my book anxiety is through the roof! I'm super excited that now I have an excuse to reorganize my bookshelves.
Here's a funny story for you, I was in the fiction room of the book sale with a half-dozen older, respectable ladies when a news photographer came in. He asked -- individually -- if he could take pictures of the women as they pawed through books. Each woman declined and HE NEVER ASKED ME. I suppose pregnant, sweaty, tattooed, pierced chicks aren't newspaper material. Sigh....

Oh, that's a terrible story--they must equate library sales with "proper" old ladies--and too funny they all turned him down. What a thought! It sounds like you found some great books, though. I came away with a nice pile at my last library sale, too.
Nice haul!! Have fun reorganizing your bookshelves :O)
Dude! Pregnant, sweaty, tattooed chicks are the coolest of the library sale patrons! Poor guy. At least we know the truth.
Beautiful stacks! I'll be re-reading The Thirteenth Tale one day. It was my fave last year.
why do i never hear about these things until it is too late? WHHYYYY????? :)
Good haul!
The Thirteenth Tale was a really good book. I hope the author writes something new soon.
I love book sales! Our YMCA has one annually every October. Can't wait.
I second the high marks for The Thirteenth Tale - it was going to be a reread for me for October (a good fall book!) but (sigh) I think I might not get to it with so many others piling up.
The funny part is that I work in a library and I have library-themed tattoos; he couldn't have picked a better library chick!
Found your blog through Katie Hall. Great stuff!
I adore library book sales, but I have a tendency to miss them.
And you should have directed a hefty volume right at that photographer's noggin.
